My least favourite state institution, the (un)employment agency, tossed at me a lifebuoy today. I had a missed call from them from nine in the morning (how can they assume that an unemployed person is up this early?) and I called back at noon (as soon as I woke up). My requalification request was granted and starting in March, I’ll be dispatched to a three-week geek course.
I’m as pleased as annoyed. I’m not exactly in the habit of getting up in the middle of the night (that is, morning for people with day jobs), commuting to the other end of the country (it’s a small country) and spending a whole day seriously focusing on something. Every. single. weekday. (I know, I know, welcome to normal life.) On a less depressing note, I will come in contact with fellow people, which I’m not in the habit of doing either, so I hope to learn more about the species.
Geek course! Could be interesting. How long will the commute take … train? Other end of the country sounds really bad, but then again … it doesn’t mean anything to me.
When does the course begin?

Yes, the course actually looks helpful. It’s html, CSS, a bit of php and others. The commute will take about an hour on train or bus, which isn’t too bad. I remember fifteen years ago, it took two hours. But then, of course, I’ll need to add a substantial amount of time to get from home to station and from the destination station to the place where the course is held. It will be quite demanding for me. I’m starting on the last of February and I’ll definitely blog about it!

I had a job like that once … the actual bus ride only took an hour, but like you said … all the time to get there, and home, really adds to it! Will be interesting reading about it 😉

Exactly. I’ll keep you posted! Provided that I will able to even post, I suspect I’ll be so exhausted that I’ll just spend all my time at home sleeping.

I think you will be exhausted in the beginning. I remember when I worked [for two days] 🙂

I do feel for you enduring this process. I remember being told I was over qualified time and again – and that was before I had even attained my first degree. It’s a dispiriting process. I’m glad your humour is a source of succour. Best of luck.

It is dispiriting in some ways, but I like it that the more awkward a situation is, the better blog post it makes 😉 Anything for the blog…
I was registered at the employment agency once, after I finished my BA degree, and I’m pleased to notice that I’m treated much better, now that I have a PhD. It’s not that anyone would help me, but they’re less unpleasant and mostly leave me to myself. Which is, I guess, the best one can hope for. Plus, to my great surprise, they’re actually paying me for the course. I didn’t give it much change.

Joining the rest of the human race ? Lol 🙂 Couldn’t happen to a nicer – um alien ?

I live a rather reclusive life, so yes, it’ll be joining the rest of the human race for me 😉 I’m unreasonably looking forward to it, though I suspect that I’ll hate it.

Hope not. You might learn something 🙂

I do hope to learn something! But I hate to be optimistic. I’m always disappointed when I’m optimistic. So as a precaution, I will expect to hate it and see what happens.

You sound like my husband, lol! He’s always a glass half empty type.

Haha, I think I’d like your husband – we would keep the small talk going about depressive things…

Over a glass or three of wine, to which he is also partial 🙂

Ok, that’s funny, I’m very partial to wine. And to slivovitz.

I feel you.Being unemployed myself I have no reason to get up early.Except now when I’m attending career coaching course. I’ll never understand how people can wake up early everyday at 7 am or even earlier.

A career coaching course? That sounds a bit abstract, but hopefully it turns out to be helpful 🙂 I’ve been forced to get up early at many stages of my life, but I never got used to it. It’s just beyond me.

It’s been one week and I’m totally knackered already. 7 more weeks of that. I really hope it will be useful or I’m waking up early for nothing.

I’m positive I’ll be a total zombie during my course. All the early rising and commuting. I’m glad my course is only three weeks. I can’t imagine two months…

Good luck with the course. Like you, I tend to set the bar pretty low and then hope for the best 😉
Word of warning though if you haven’t been out much among humans lately … humans in large doses really suck. Wear your brave face 😉

Haha, thank you for your warning, I’ll bear that in mind. I suspect that I’ll wear my “I despite you all” face, which isn’t likely to help. But let’s hope for the best! Maybe aspiring geeks are just the kind of people that I’d like 🙂
