A New Me, a New Blog Theme

I’m a promiscuous person. At least as far as blog themes are concerned. After some three months with Sela, I exchanged the poor babe for the brand new Nucleare.

With changes in my personal life (for the better) and the change of the season to spring(ish), I deliberately went for a brighter, bolder look for my blog. While I understand that the change from clean and neat to busy and colourful might not appeal to everyone, I’m more or less happy with the outcome.

There is still some fine tuning to do though. And here is where I’d love your input! Please vote in the poll below and/or tell me in a comment what you (dis)like about the current design and functionality and what changes you’d like to see. Your ideas are much appreciated!

  1. I like the new looks, but some of the text in the right coloumn is difficult to read against the dark background. It works if you scroll though, so it’s not a huge problem.

    1. Thanks a lot for your comment, Cardinal! You are right, I sacrificed readability of the sidebar for the background image, which I really wanted to use – but as you say, it’s readable when you scroll, and I was thinking the main thing is for the blog posts to be plain black on white and easy to read. I’m glad to hear it’s otherwise ok!

  2. I love the new look, very fresh and engaging and the black on white look on the posts is perfect for those like me who can’t see anything! I agree with cardinal that the text is a little harder to read at the bottom of the page although it is very good when it moves up against the sky so I think it works well as a whole. Also, great new “avatar” in the header.

    1. Thank you for your feedback, Andy, good to hear that it more or less works for you πŸ™‚ I’m too much in love with my new background to part with it for now, so my apologies for the amount of scrolling needed to read the sidebar… Rest assured though that there is no essential info in the sidebar and you can do without it πŸ™‚

  3. I love your new look! The background picture is gorgeous… and I love the sort of monochromatic feel to it all. It suits you well, I believe. Slick, smart, artsy. Your promiscuity is forgiven. πŸ™‚ MH

    1. Yes, it is very me, you’re right… Thank you for kindly forgiving me my lack of loyalty to a chosen theme! I’m afraid I’m a theme addict, always excited when a new theme is published. Cheers!

    1. I know, there are so many nice themes that it’s almost impossible to choose just one! I usually fall in love with a brand new theme and then have to try out immediately, so I hope this one will last at least another three months πŸ˜‰ If you like it, go ahead and use it too!

  4. What Guzman said.

It’s nice, and it loads quickly in spite of the large background image. Is that your city in the background? … and did you use a tripod and remote to take the header image πŸ˜‰ ?

I have yet to find a theme I like 100%. The one I have now [Sequential] is 99% …

    1. Thank you, Rebekah, for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! Yes, what Cardinal said… Yep, it’s my city in the background, hence my emotional attachment to the background image! The header photo was taken by a beloved person, so I can’t take any credit for that one… I’ve noticed you are on a constant search for your ideal theme too, I can understand that! Sequential is actually one of the themes I was considering to use at one point. Then I chose Goran, a very similar theme.

  5. The posts are easier to read, which is definitely a plus.
My only issue, and it may not have anything to do with the new theme, is that when I right click on the title of one of your posts in the wordpress reader your site doesn’t load anymore. I had to go to my site and click on your site under ‘blogs I follow’ to get to your site. Maybe it’s just a glitch with WordPress today, but I thought I’d let you know just in case.

    1. Thank you so much for tuning in! It’s funny, the issue that you describe, I’ll need to look into it. I don’t think that it’s necessarily caused by the change of theme, but it’s clearly a major bother. I’ll try to follow my blog and see how the Reader behaves in different browsers… Hope it will be fixed! Thanks again for this tip πŸ™‚

  6. I like it, and I can bet you love the background picture, because I love the featured image on my blog’s home page πŸ™‚ but I think the background is a bit too much so it distracts from the post.

    1. Thanks so much, Shida, for sharing your thoughts! You are right, I do like my background image a lot – so much that I eventually decided to sacrifice some of the cleanliness and neatness of the blog for the chance to display my favourite picture as the background. I was trying to tone down its distracting effect by making it monochrome; but I’ll definitely give it more thought yet!

      1. I know the feeling πŸ™‚ do you think it could fit where your cover photo is? With the shades?

        1. You read my thoughts! I was considering this too but then decided I didn’t want a photo of a particular place in the header, as it’s not about a place but about me… I’m very self-indulgent :-O

          1. Lol yea, I get you, and in the end it’s your blog πŸ™‚ I’m sure you’ll decide what you think is best in the end.

  7. It was a great choice. I love it. Monochrome, sleek, elegant…
    Well done, Mara.
I have been looking for new one as well buy haven’t made my choice yet. Suggestions on what was on your top list that catered for photos and text?

    1. Oh, thank you for approving! Really, it means a lot. I was looking into paid themes too, but then I thought I wouldn’t want to stick with one theme forever, which I would feel pressed to if I bought it.

I was using Motif, your theme, formerly too, and here are some of my favourite themes that I was either using myself earlier or seriously considering:
